Morbidity and Mortality
Notes, as a Diary
by Jim West
Here I review any incident of morbidity or mortality made known to me via the news, friends or personal experience, time allowing. My conversations with anyone often move towards epidemiology. Any review, once begun, is posted immediately to avoid prejudicial selection of incidents. The underlying theory here is: Major disease symptoms are triggered by environmental factors and in some cases emotional stress (which in turn could be exacerbated by environment). Chronic exposure accumulates and sets up the victim for the pollution spike, which acts as a trigger. Notes remains private or public, as they are encountered.

NW NYC 6/1/2009 During the morning of 6/02, HC says, "Here today, gone tomorrow! Just yesterday at 8:30pm, a woman in our building suddenly fell over dead while sitting outside her apartment, waiting for a visitor. She was in good health and in her early 70s." I assembled a traffic study, which showed an adjacent expressway, wind direction sustained and in-line with expressway towards the victim, and wind speed sustained at near zero. This weather began approximately 40 minutes prior to death, wind dir always 210 degrees.
Prior to those weather conditions, victim's apartment was exposed to 8 hours of similar weather, though with wind of wavering direction, beginning roughly 170 degrees at 12 noon, shifting towards 210 degrees by 7:45pm indicating chronic exposure to expressway pollutants.
Upon seeing this study, HC responded, "Everyone in NYC is next to an expressway." I replied, "Some are closer than others." HC discontinued discussion.
Soho, NYC 2002 Child is diagnosed with autism at age two. Acquaintance GB states she is pregnant and consulting a doctor about birth. I warn her about vaccines. She replies, "I resent it when people interfere with the trust between doctor and patient." Months later, the infant is born. GB says the infant is healthy, and implies my fears were unwarranted. GB is happy and shows me a photograph. Only I see an unmentionable madness in the infant's face. Two years later, as development is not recognized as normal, the diagnosis is autism and GB is devastated. GB admits vaccines were likely causative, yet has no regrets, quoting her doctor who said, "The benefits of vaccines outweigh the risk."
(continued...) I tell GB that organic food and filtered water are important. GB says, "I don't want to live in that kind of world." A few years later, the child's symptoms become so severe that orthodox doctors order GB and her family to switch completely to organic food. GB says, "I was lead kicking and screaming, but our diet is now completely organic."
Nevertheless, GB continues to avoid discussion of medical topics, though only if toxicology is mentioned.
Park Slope, Brooklyn 2005 Man, age 53, healthy, calls sick to work saying he has flu. He tells friends it is just a cold or flu. Next day he is dead. Residence of victim is 2000 feet directly south and in-line of several miles of straight BQE (expressway). [traffic study required with weather] Stroke01
East NJ 7/2006 A woman, age 55, felt tired, and pain in chest. She went to her doctor, who announced a heart attack, then went to hospital, during exploratory surgery, surgeons burst an artery near the heart. Repaired damage and added a pacemaker. Victim was told an infection caused his illness. Victim lives downwind (prevailing winds) approx 15 miles from the major refineries, and other petrochemical industries in NJ. Date of major symptoms leading to hospitalization, corresponds with one of (if not) the highest air pollution reading found in EPA ozone maps for that summer, in mid-July.
Was infection confirmed? Was it a symbiotic response? Are veinous and arterial blockages symptoms of air pollution? [wind study required]
Victim will not consider air pollution and continues to bicycle through rush hour traffic.

Harlem 2003 Young, healthy, educated health activist dies during summer after a mysterious, an unspecified, 6-week debilitating illness. Symptoms began during apartment renovation, which occurred during highest air pollution season of the year, mid and late summer. Expressways likely were nearby this upper west NYC residence, exact location not known at present. [traffic study required] Lupus01
Brooklyn 2000 Woman describes her symptoms of Lupus; where symptoms are a wasting away of the flesh in her face. She eats organic and tries to take care of herself, but to no avail. She sells merchandise daily at her table, located on a sidewalk, adjacent the heavily trafficked 7th Avenue, in Manhattan. Dental01
NYC 7/14/2001 At 10:00am hb describes excruciating pain, simultaneously (at the exact moment) in three teeth, one in the upper jaw right side, another in the lower jaw left rear, and the third in the lower jaw left mid. Dental work was required. This is obviously hormonal. and likely related to air pollution. Previously to this, hb's teeth felt internally 'itchy' and 'achy' for weeks. hb day-dreamed of them exploding.
Two weeks later EPA recommended a ban on MTBE in gasoline, levels of which were elevated in 1995.
This period was the apex of summer avian death. Crows were dropping dead in unusually large numbers throughout NYC, especially noticeable in Queens.
Related observation: Dr. xxx, writes that dental abscess is the first sign of pesticide poisoning among farmers.
[requires specific traffic study, date may be a few days off]
Queens 1/20/1980 ch describes small amount of blood in toothbrush rinse in the morning, for the first time in in his life. ch moved from rural Maryland to a Queens, NYC apartment, located 100 yards from LIE expressway. This could be reviewed in the context of capillary leakage, one of the symptoms of CO poisoning. StiffNeck01
Manhattan 6/4/2009 rm describes stiff painful neck, first noticed Thurs, 6/42009, 6:30am, upon waking. rm easily fatigued due to pain and inability to move. Symptoms substantially diminish by 6/6/2009am, but lethargy continues through to mid-July. Stiff neck matches perfectly with a SUIR (slow, unidirectional wind, in-line with rush-hour traffic), from 6/2/2009 ending 6/5. 1,800 ft from SUIR.
Weather station lists average windspeed for 6/2-6/4 as 0.0mph and average direction as drifting from in-line expressway, i.e., 3 miles in-line 6-lane traffic. Temperatures were record-high, close to 90F. As of 6/5 wind sped up.
